Our company launched out of MIT in 2019 and is growing its team (and crops) in Northern California.


About the Role

We’re seeking an individual with ambitions to change the world and recognition that it will take determination and great team collaboration to get there. The Research Associate will work with our research team to gather and analyze scientific data while growing, harvesting, and processing our novel crops. Specifically, the role entails:

  • Supporting plant science by setting up experiments and collecting and analyzing data

  • Supporting engineering by designing, building, and testing a range of prototype technologies

  • Supporting operations by overseeing and optimizing automated growth and harvesting processes


The candidate should be a creative and curious problem solver with an eye for details. Compensation will be competitive and dependent on experience. This position is located in Sonoma and Marin Counties at several of FYTO’s farming operations. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States and are subject to a background check.


Your required qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in physical or biological sciences or engineering

  • Basic computer skills, including experience with MS Office (Excel, Powerpoint, and Word).

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in remote locations as well as with a team

  • Have a valid driver’s license and good driving record

  •  Quick learner who is flexible, self-motivated, able to ask questions, and thrive in a startup environment


Other preferred qualifications

  • Background in farming, plant science, horticulture, agronomy, botany, or related field is a plus

  • Experience conducting scientific experiments

  • Experience working in a start-up environment

  • Knowledge and experience with agriculture in California 


Physical activity requirements

  • Walk across a variety of terrains, including uneven surfaces

  • Climb, jump, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and install equipment

  • Stand for extended time periods

  • Lift and carry 25 lbs. but occasionally up to 50 lbs.

  • Work in conditions with varying humidity, sunlight and temperatures (32 o – 95o depending on the season)
