About the Role

We’re seeking an exceptional, well-rounded engineer that is keen to use their skills to improve the global food system. This Engineer will work with our team to develop and implement state-of-the-art technologies for growing, harvesting, and processing our crops. This will include designing, building, and testing electro-mechanical solutions to a variety of technical challenges. Additional responsibilities will range from acquiring and analyzing sensor data to specifying and sourcing components from vendors. The candidate should be a creative problem solver, have an eye for details, and be a data-driven decision maker. Compensation will be competitive and dependent on experience. This position is located in the Petaluma area at several of FYTO’s operations. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States and are subject to a background check.


Your required qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, biological, chemical engineering or similar.

  • 2+ years of relevant experience in cross-disciplinary research and development.

  • Advanced computer skills, including CAD, numerical modeling, and MS Office (Excel, Powerpoint, and Word).

  • Demonstrated ability to design and test hardware prototypes.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in remote locations as well as with a team.

  • Have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.

  • Quick learner who is flexible, self-motivated, able to ask questions, and thrive in a startup environment.


Other preferred qualifications

  • Master’s degree in engineering discipline, physical sciences, or computer science

  • Professional experience in automating novel processes

  • Experience with computer-vision enabled systems

  • Experience working in a start-up environment  

  • Some Spanish speaking skills 


Physical activity requirements

  • Walk across a variety of terrains, including uneven surfaces

  • Climb, jump, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and install equipment

  • Stand for extended time periods

  • Lift and carry 25 lbs. but occasionally up to 50 lbs.

  • Work in conditions with varying humidity, sunlight and temperatures (32 o – 95o depending on the season)
